Now that you have decided to get a hamster, it;s time to choose what type of hamster is best for you. The main types of hamsters are

  • Syrian Hamsters, Normally larger
  • Campbell Russian dwarf Hamster
  • Winter-White dwarf Hamsters
  • Roborovski dwarf Hamsters
  • Chinese dwarf Hamsters

Now, I will tell you about each type of hamster. Note that all the types of hamsters come in varieties of colors and patterns.

Syrian Hamsters:  They are very kind and lovable once tamed, Syrians are the easiest to care for. They are best for younger children and beginners, mainly because they are larger and easier to hold. Also, they rarely bite, unless they are frightened so approach them slowly. Many look like this. Many look like this

Campbell Russian Dwarf Hamsters: Campbells are much smaller and harder to handel. But, they are very social and may enjoy being caged together, while Syrians must not be caged together. They also nip when they are frightened.

Many look like this.

Winter-White Dwarf Hamsters: Winter-Whites are one of the smartest hamsters, they have a unique color and pattern on their fur. Although they do not enjoy being held as much as the others.

Many look like this. ( They are also sometimes white)

Roborovski Dwarf Hamster: Roborovskis are very cute but extremely small and energetic. I do not recommend getting them younger children. They require much responsibility, as do all hamsters. Also, Roborovskis are more difficult to tame  and frightened quit easily. I personally feel that they show less love for their owners than the other hamsters.

Many Look Like This.

Chinese Dwarf Hamsters: Chinese Hamsters like the Roborovskis are also fast and hard to tame. They are much more active than the others and they can he housed together and get along well, but it all depends on their personality. Lastly, chinese hamsters have long tail unlike the others who have a small fur tail that barely shows!

Many look like this.

Of course there are still many different breed of hamster, but these are the main types that are more commonly seen in pet stores. Now, you can decide which hamsters fits you best.
